Stain Removal

Stains on carpet and upholstery come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Stains can consist of many different kinds of substances, which all have unique chemical and physical properties. It is important to remember these things when you are selecting a carpet cleaning product and method for spot removal of stains. This article will cover some different kinds of stains and the science and techniques for removing them.

Plant Based Stain Removal (tannins)

Tea, beer, wine, juice, berries, tomato sauce and even soda are examples of stains that contain plant based dyes and can be a difficult spot to remove from carpet and upholstery. The reason for this is that they contain compounds called tannins. What are tannins? In simple terms and for the purposes of this article, tannins are acidic, astringent, antioxidant compounds that make them great for your health but not so great for your carpet or upholstery. The problem is that these compounds, due to their acidic nature, bind to the acid dye sites in your carpet that were not fully saturated during the original manufacture and dying process. Luckily CleanCo offers a protectant application service that helps to close these dye sites in your carpet and protects acid based stains from forming. If you did not elect to protect your carpets with Green Guard TM, we recommend applying a damp towel to the spill and weighting it down and contacting a CleanCo carpet cleaning professional t remove the stain. CleanCo has specific cleaners for removing tannins from carpet and upholstery. In addition to the acid base dyes in these compounds many also contain sugars which can leave a sticky residue that is attractive to dirt and grime. Luckily CleanCo has carpet cleaning compounds that are specifically designed to dissolved sugars so that they can be extracted by a high pressure carpet cleaner. Liquids spilled on your carpet and left untreated can soak into the carpet pad and subflooring below, when these stains are eventually treated they can wick up through the carpet causing them to reemerge later. If these stains have set in for a long period of time it may take several treatments to completely remove the stain.

Gum, and Adhesive Stains

Dried gum or adhesive can be a difficult spot removal process, the first step is to remove the dried loose particles with a scraper, then applying a citrus based enzymatic stain removal compound to dissolve the remaining stain. Rinsing the area with warm water then using a commercial high pressure extractor to remove the remaining residue and dry the spot will complete the process of removing this kind of stain.

Tar, Oil and Grease

Tar, oil, and grease stains should first be addressed by removing all loose oil, tar or grease and then applying specialized compounds that breakdown the oil, tar or grease. First use a bone spatula or scraper, remove excess oil, tar or grease. Next apply enzymatic citrus based cleaner and follow up with specialized compounds for extracting grease, tar or oil. Finally use a commercial pressure extractor to remove any residue and immediately dry the carpet or upholstery.

Pet Stains

The IICRC recommends that carpet, upholstery or carpet pads that have been soiled with urine or fecal matter from water damage be removed and replaced. The following processes are the general process of removing pet urine or feces spot removal. Pet stain removal can be achieved through a series of steps, applying an alkaline based spot remover, such as Matrix spot remover, then tamping or blotting with a towel or brush. Next, a high PH stain removal compound, such as Matrix release undiluted, should be applied directly to the spot, then blotted out with a brush or towel. Tannin removal cleaning compounds can be applied and blotted in the same manner. Finally, the area should be treated with odor neutralizing enzymes. Pet stain removal is an involved process, but it is worth doing well, to prevent long term health and safety issues. It is recommended that you utilize a professional carpet cleaner with knowledgeable technicians, such as CleanCo Carpet Window and Air Duct Cleaning when concerning pet stain removal.
